Hertfordshire Police Federation

Who are Hertfordshire Police Federation?

Hertfordshire Police FederationIn simple terms Hertfordshire Police Federation is the support network behind the police officers of Hertfordshire. They help their members to navigate the daily stresses of work on the front line, providing guidance and resources for matters such as pay, conditions, safety and equality. They even arrange special discounts for everything from days out to home insurance and mobile phones. Most importantly though, they're there for constables, sergeants and inspectors when times get tough.

Ballyhoo has worked with Hertfordshire Police Federation for many years and we were delighted to hear that they wanted us to update their website. Their website had gone through many small iterations since it was first built so it was time to create a more cohesive environment for the huge amount of information stored online.

From the existing website's traffic data we could see that a growing number of Hertfordshire's visitors were accessing the Internet through a mobile device so it was important that the new website catered for these users. We also knew that bringing the latest news to members was a big priority for the Federation so we wanted this to be the main focus of the new site.

What the client has to say about our work...

Always a first class service. Continue to provide an exceptional service and prompt turn around in maintaining our website.

Helen Beavis, Office Manager

Hertfordshire Police Federation MobileAs with any good website, herts.polfed.org has been designed with the user's needs in mind and has been well thought out to include key information in all the right places. That doesn't mean we've scrimped on style though.

Strong imagery of the Hertfordshire area greets visitors to the home page, instilling a sense of belonging for members who have been working in and around the area for their entire careers. Various shades of blue – the classic Police colour – make up the main colour palette of the website. Bright white is used for contrast and to ensure good text legibility, with yellow used as an accent colour to draw attention to certain aspects of the design, for example the member login button.

Look and feel design concepts for both the desktop and mobile views of the website were created for Hertfordshire's approval, with revisions made as required until they were 100% happy.

This website has been built on the Joomla platform – an open source content management system with a myriad of features and third-party plugins available. In a temporary online environment, we began with upgrading the site to the latest stable version of Joomla and then commenced the development of a custom template based on the design concepts produced in the previous stage of the project.

We always endeavour to match our design concepts pixel-perfectly, bringing the agreed upon design to life using technologies including HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Once this was achieved we tested extensively in all of the major web browsers for render and performance with further testing for responsiveness on a wide range of smartphones.

Key Features

  • Latest & Featured News
As previously mentioned, it's important for Hertfordshire Police Federation to actively bring the latest policing news to their members through their website. To allow members to quickly check headlines at a glance we have pulled through the newest two articles added to the News page under the heading of Latest News & Press on the homepage. Below this you'll find Featured News, this allows Hertfordshire to give certain articles prominence beyond their addition to the site.
  • Sponsor Banners
Like many of their counterparts, Hertfordshire Police Federation help to fund the service they provide by allocating advertising space to relevant service providers. Dedicated space on the right column of the site has been set aside for sponsor banners, which can be managed easily through the Joomla administration area. Banners are displayed in random order whenever a new page loads or is refreshed.
  • Google Map
An interactive map of the Federation office has been added to the Contact section of the website. Powered by Google Maps, this allows users to zoom in on the location, see a satellite view of the area and get detailed directions.
  • User Registration
To allow some of the content on this website to be restricted to members only, we configured Joomla to allow user registration. Hertfordshire Police Federation staff have the ability to moderate and approve registrations and can set content as restricted on a page-by-page basis. To encourage members to register after the new website launched, Hertfordshire ran a competition whereby anyone who registered by a certain date would be entered into a competition to win Amazon gift vouchers.
  • Tiled Slideshow
The homepage of the site features a 'slideshow' of photographs from the Hertfordshire area. Each tile in the slideshow cycles through a number of images at different rates, giving the homepage a very fluid feel and making a big impact on new visitors to the site.
  • National News RSS Feed
The Police Federation of England & Wales sits above the regional branches and has a very active news page of its own. We've pulled in their RSS feed and displayed this in a scrolling marquee below the site navigation to allow Hertfordshire members to see the latest headlines on both a national and local level.
